Acupuncture

BenefitsPainAnxietyFertilityFirst Session

Acupuncture is a traditional Chinese medicine practice and method of supporting the body and mind systems in their own natural healing processes. Acupuncture is based on the concept that a blockage or disruption in the flow of the body's life energy, or Qi (pronounced "chee") can cause health issues or disease. Acupuncture is a minimally invasive approach used to treat a variety of conditions by stimulating strategic points on our body.

An acupuncturist will insert hair-thin needles into specific points throughout the body to stimulate the central nervous system and balance the body's energy to stimulate healing and promote relaxation. Think of QI as your body's natural inner workings. Sometimes you're more prone to illness when feeling stressed or anxious. When you're relaxed and healthy, your body physically reflects that too. After all, your mood, mental health and general well-being do affect your physical health.

Our licensed acupuncturist, Cedar S. Kennedy, LAc, EAMP, is trained to treat a range of conditions and specializes in fertility, PCOS, endometriosis and unexplained infertility.

Acupuncture for Pain

Acupuncture has been increasingly used as an integrative or complementary therapy for pain. The insertion of extremely fine needles into the skin at specific "acupoints" can help relieve pain - from acute to chronic low back pain, neck pain, nerve pain, headaches, knee osteoarthritis, myofascial pain, menstrual cramps, fibromyalgia and more - by releasing endorphins, the body's natural pain-killing chemicals and by affecting the part of the brain that regulates serotonin, a brain chemical involved with mood.

Acupuncture for Anxiety

Acupuncture treatment can help ease anxiety by regulating the nervous system, specifically by bringing the branches of the autonomic nervous system back into balance. When you're anxious, your sympathetic nervous system - the one that controls your "fight or flight" system takes over, whereas your parasympathetic ("rest and digest" system) is stifled. Acupuncture treatment re-balances the sympathetic system to help shift the body back into a relaxed state and calm the mind.

Acupuncture stimulates the body's natural feel-good hormones increasing levels of serotonin, while reducing the level of stress hormones like cortisol. Stress triggers the production of certain hormones (cortisol and adrenaline) to enable the body to deal with stress. Chronic stress can reduce your serotonin levels which is the hormone associated with happiness and feelings of well-being. Acupuncture helps to balance these hormones and reduce symptoms of general anxiety.

First Acupuncture Session

Your first acupuncture session will be scheduled for 1 hour and 45 minutes. The first half of this session, our acupuncturist will go over your paperwork with you to discuss your health history, any problems or concerns you have and the reason for your visit. You will be able to ask questions and discuss any concerns about your condition and/or acupuncture treatment.

The second half of the session will be your first acupuncture treatment. You will lie on a table and relax as hair-thin needles are inserted into specific points throughout your body. Every treatment is custom tailored for each client as the needle insertion points are carefully selected to treat your condition(s).
